What is twin skin thermal facade?

There are many sustainable design techniques in use in the modern construction industry, and at J.V.Tierney & Co, our team of highly experienced consulting engineering designers use a range of new and established methods to create the most energy efficient buildings and building services.

In this article, we look at the construction technique known as Twin Skin Thermal Facade, which mimics human skin in its ability to keep buildings warm in the cold and cool in warmer weather. This ventilation method is a well-practiced one, having been around for decades, but the fact that it is still being used by modern mechanical and electrical engineers, gives you some idea of its efficacy.

How Does it Work?

As the name would suggest, the technique involves the use of 2 parallel layers of wall, with an inner and outer skin. These two ‘skins’ are typically transparent and are separated by an ‘air corridor’ and the technology is an example of what is known as ‘active’ facade, in that it is able to actively effect the indoor climate. It is available in a ‘fan supported’, ‘natural’ or ‘mechanical’ design, each allowing the user to adjust the temperature to the required levels.

One of the main benefits of the natural variety of this technology is its ability to make use of natural wind by simply allowing it to pass through the building when ventilation is needed.

An example of this the natural method in action can be seen on the Award Winning Criminal Courts of Justice Dublin building project, for which we were responsible for all aspects relating to mechanical, electrical & sustainable Design. It is a project that won multiple awards and one you can see in more detail by following this link http://bit.ly/2uKCw86
