LIDL Newbridge Regional Distribution Centre




We are proud to announce that the LIDL Newbridge Regional Distribution Centre, which we carried out the Mechanical, Electrical and Sustainable Services Design and BREEAM Assessment, has received the Association for Consulting Engineers of Ireland’s 2020 Excellence Award in the category of Environmental Sustainability in the Built Environment. This 58,000m2, BER “A” Rated and BREEAM “Excellent” accredited Logistic Distribution Centre and Office Building’s Services Design focused on maximising energy generation, heat recovery and efficiency, leading it to be a highly sustainable, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly development.

LIDL Newbridge Regional Distribution Centre Photo Voltaic (PV) Power generation array is capable of generating over 1 million kWhrs of electricity, or enough electrical energy to power 2000 average households. The PV Array will provide 25% plus of the electrical power usage of the development throughout the year. The installation consists of an array of 4,000 panels at 1200kWp, spread across an area of 10,000m2, or 1.8 football fields, and is currently the single largest rooftop PV Array in Ireland – JVT are working with LIDL on a new exciting project which may top this!!.  It is estimated that this will reduce the building’s carbon emissions by 473 tonnes a year which is a huge statement of intent from LIDL in today’s clean energy conscious climate.

The design incorporates a waste heat recovery system from the refrigeration compressors and this waste heat is used to provide sufficient heat and anti-heave for the complete building through a 200km network of underfloor heating pipework. The heat capacity of the heat recovery plant is 250kW and this is linked to a cascade condenser boiler system to provide additional Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) for peak demands. Below are additional sustainable energy features delivered as part of the project

  • Rainwater Harvesting which is used for the buildings toilet water flushing, reducing the demand on the public water main by approximately 1 million litres per annum.
  • Array of Electric Vehicle Charging points for the LIDL’s fleet of Electric cars.
  • LED Lighting with DALI daylight dimming control and presence/absence control.
  • A Building Management system to ensure efficient use and monitoring of the HEVAC, mechanical plant and electrical systems.
