Lidl’s New €100 million Regional Distribution Centre, Newbridge
J.V Tierney and Co. are proud to have carried out the M&E Design Services on Lidl’s Largest ever property in Ireland. With the recent appointment of John Paul Construction as the Construction contractors. The new €100m Lidl Retail Distribution Centre’s construction commenced in Newbridge in September 2018, with a construction completion date of November 2019.
The building 58,000m2 and is nearly ½ Km in length and is noted to be Lidl’s single largest investment in Ireland since 2000.
The M&E Service Design provided by our team put a huge emphasis on sustainable and renewable energy design with approximately 20% of the overall electrical demand for the 58,000sqm RDC being provided by its own solar Photovoltaic (PV) System. 6600m2 of PV panel will be installed on the roof of the building, and will provide 1.2 Mega Watts of Electricity (see our article on Photovoltaic Systems here). Concurrently In order to cut down on building maintenance costs and Carbon (CO2) outputs our design includes the installation of LED Lights with daylight control with dimming control.
Approximately 33% of the distribution centre is to be refrigerated, therefore a high efficiency CO2/ Ammonia refrigeration plant will be installed, which has ozone depletion potential of 0 and global warming potential of 1. The refrigeration plant will deal with the large heat demand of the building for most of the year as not alone will it be dealing with freezing and chilling requirements, the waste heat from the refrigeration plant is recovered and is used to heat the building also. Heat is recuperated all year round to heat the slab under the freezers to prevent the ground from freezing.
