J.V. Tierney & Co and Our MEP BIM Capabilities

We began using Building Information Modelling (BIM) software in 2005 at J.V. Tierney & Co. Consulting Engineers to improve the operation of internal procedures and achieve efficiencies in time, cost and materials.

Our first BIM software were ‘stand-alone’ products, these included DIALux for lighting design, Ecotect for solar analysis and IES-VE for thermal modelling. Despite these products being at the forefront of the technology, they had a major drawback in their inability to ‘talk’ to each other.

Cross-compatible

Our Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) BIM capabilities are underpinned by a desire to move forward with ever more intuitive and innovative products. As the technology has developed and advanced, so has J.V. Tierney. In 2010 we adopted the use of more integrated BIM software packages that were cross-compatible. Our suite of BIM products has developed organically, as more tools and resources have become available.

Our full and comprehensive line of BIM software products in use include:

  • Autodesk Building Design Suite Premium (Revit Suite, Navisworks, Recap etc.)

  • Green Building Studio (building performance simulations)

  • IES-VE (dynamic thermal simulation and CFD analysis)

  • DIALux (indoor & outdoor lighting calculations)

  • COBie (information exchange for the life cycle management needed by the Facility Manager)

  • Ecotect (solar analysis)

  • MagiCAD (MEP calculation tool)

BIM Dublin

J.V. Tierney & Co. consulting engineers, based in Dublin, deliver BIM services in accordance with PAS1192-2 (sponsored by the Construction Industry Council – CIC). This BSI specification stipulates the requirements for achieving BIM Level 2, focusing on project delivery through the collaborative use of BIM software across different disciplines from design through to construction.

The breakdown of these services includes:

  • Thermal modelling and energy analysis

  • Daylight, Sun Cast and Shadow analysis

  • Internal and External Artificial Lighting Calculations.

  • Inter-Discipline Project Co-ordination and Collaboration.

  • Clash and Interference Detection.
