BREEAM

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) was first published by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990. It is the world’s longest established sustainability assessment method and addresses a number of lifecycle stages including New Construction, Refurbishment and In-Use. There are more than 562,500 certified BREEAM developments worldwide with almost 2,266,300 buildings registered for assessment since its inception.

The scheme aims to quantify and reduce the impact of buildings by rewarding designs that take positive steps to minimise their environmental burden. Factors such as the construction method, materials used, water consumption targets and energy targets are taken into consideration.

BREEAM aims to:
Mitigate the impacts of buildings on the environment
Enable buildings to be recognised according to their environmental benefits
Provide a credible, environmental label for buildings
Stimulate demand for sustainable buildings
Assessment and Categories

The BREEAM assessment evaluates the procurement, design, construction and operation of a development against targets based on performance benchmarks. Developments are rated and certified on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding with assessments carried out by independent, licensed assessors.

BREEAM measures sustainability across 10 categories; energy, health & wellbeing, innovation, land use, materials, management, pollution, transport, waste and water. Each of these categories is then sub-divided further with ‘credits’ being awarded for each target reached. The number of credits awarded determines the final performance rating.

BREEAM helps investors, developers, designers, construction teams and occupiers to use natural resources more efficiently. Growing evidence demonstrates that sustainable developments, such as those delivered through BREEAM, have the potential to deliver huge financial benefits over a lifetime. Research suggests that any additional investment required in developing more sustainable building is generally recovered within two to five years.
BREEAM raises awareness about the benefits of sustainability while challenging developers and designers to lessen the impact of construction through innovative techniques and effective use of resources.
